Предисловие


Настоящие методические указания предназначены для студентов младших курсов неязыковых ВУЗов всех специальностей в качестве дополнительного материала при изучении курса английского языка. Они могут выполняться в аудитории под руководством преподавателя, а также рекомендоваться для самостоятельной работы студентов с последующим контролем выполнения преподавателем.

Указания содержат методические рекомендации и серию упражнений, предназначенных для развития навыков правильного выбора и употребления предлогов и предложных словосочетаний.

Как известно, предлоги английского языка трудно поддаются усвоению, и даже те, кто достаточно хорошо владеет английским языком, допускают ошибки при употреблении предлогов.

Это объясняется тем, что предлоги, относясь к структурно-граммати-ческим оформителям предложения, выполняют программную функцию, т. е. составляют канву высказывания.

Обладая во многих случаях абстрактным значением, предлоги часто употребляются носителями языка автоматизировано.

Поскольку все автоматизированные элементы языка плохо осознаются говорящими, то происходит отождествление английских предлогов с их коррелятами в родном языке. В связи с этим в данных указаниях осуществляется дифференцированный подход к изучению предлогов: предлоги, имеющие «прозрачную» семантику изучаются осознанно, их значение раскрывается в сравнении с русским языком и наглядно иллюстрируется с помощью схем; предлоги, не имеющие четко выраженного лексического значения усваиваются автоматически через серию упражнений.

Упражнения могут выполняться выборочно, в зависимости от степени подготовки студентов.

1. В английском языке (в отличие от русского) среди предлогов пространственных отношений выделяются предлоги места и направления

Например:

2. Look at the prepositions in exercise 1 again and write them in three columns

Существует различие в употреблении предлогов at и in с учреждениями и зданиями общественного назначения.

Предлог at употребляется, когда это учреждение используется по своему прямому назначению:

at school в школе (учиться/ работает)

at the cinema в кино (смотреть фильм)

at the meeting на собрании

Предлог in употребляется, когда мы имеем ввиду здание этого учреждения:

in the cinema в кино (в здании)

in the stadium на стадионе (в этом сооружении)

Unit II

Предлоги, передающие падежные отношения

В английском языке практически нет падежей. И часто предлоги берут на себя функцию передачи падежных отношений в предложении. Родительный падеж обычно передаётся предлогом «of»

Например: the function of the key – функция (чего?) клавиши

the book of the student − книга (чья?) студента

Для закрепления этого значения выполните упражнения 1, 2.

Предлог «to» часто передаёт дательный падеж кому? чему?

to write to somebody − писать кому-либо

to explain to somebody − объяснить кому-либо
3. Put in “to” or “of”

Предлоги “with” и “by” могут передавать творительный падеж. Причём мы используем “by”, когда хотим указать кем производиться действие.

The book was written by Shakespeare.

Книга была написана Шекспиром.

Мы используем “with”, когда хотим указать чем (с помощью какого орудия) производится действие

He wrote with a pencil

Он писал (чем?) карандашом
4. Put in “with” or “by”

Предлоги времени

Внимание! Не путайте временное значение предлогов с другими значениями этих же предлогов

А. Предлог «at» употребляется при указании точного времени (часов, минут, определённого момента, а также с названиями праздников)

at 5 o’clock – в пять часов

at ten past five – в десять минут шестого

at this moment – в этот момент

at noon – в полдень

at sunrise – на восходе солнца

at Christmas – на Рождество

Б. Предлог «on» употребляется с более общим обозначением времени (по сравнению с предлогом «at»), с названиями дней недели, с обозначением числа, месяца, в сочетаниях со словом (день) «day»

on Sunday – в воскресенье

on the 8th of March – восьмого марта

on his birthday - на его день рождения

on a cold winter day – в холодный зимний день

В. Предлог «in» употребляется при указании периода времени, по окончании которого произойдёт действие, а также с названием времён года, обозначением лет, месяцев, частей суток

in two days – через два дня

in June – в июне

in 2002 – в 2002 году

2. Put in the prepositions in, on or at

Two businessmen are arranging a meeting.

A: I'm free ____ the 15 th March. Can we meet then?

A: I’d like to have a meeting this month. I shall be very busi ___ April.

B: I'm having an extra couple of days' holiday ____ Easter, so perhaps the week after. Shall we meet _____ the 27 th? That's a Wednesday.

3. Put in the word or phrase and use in (the), on (the) or at (the) if necessary

4. Compare «in time» and «on time»

a) In time means «early enough»:

Translate the sentences:

  1. We got to the airport in time to have a coffee before checking in. 2. We'll have to hurry if we want to be in time for the show. 3. I was about to close the door when just in time I remember my key.

b) On time means «at the right time», «on schedule».

1. The plane took off on time. 2. I hope the meeting starts on time.
5. Put in the right phrase: in time or on time

  1. If the plane is late, we won't get to Paris ____ for our connection. 2. We were up very early, _____ to see the sun rise. 3. How can the buses run ______ with all these traffic jams. 4. The post goes at five. I'm hoping to get this letter written ______. 5. The coach will be here at twelve thirteen, if it's _______.


6. Define the meaning of «in» in the following sentences. Translate them

1. I did the crossword in five minutes. 2. Could you walk thirty miles in a day? 3. Your photos will be ready in an hour. 4. The building will open in six weeks.
7. Put in the right word: in or on

1. I've read the book. I read it _____ about three hours one afternoon.

8. Remember the meaning and use of the prepositions for, since, ago, before

and translate the following sentences

a) We use for to say how long something continues.

1. I'm staying in England for a year. 2. We swam for quite a long time.

3. The shop will be closed for ten days. 4. I've been waiting for twenty minutes. 5. We've known about it for two days. 6. I haven't seen Phil for a day or two. 7. My parents have been living in Rome for a year now.

b) We use since to say when something began.

1. I've been waiting since half past six. 2. We've known about it since Monday. 3. My parents have been living in Rome since last year. 4. I saw Phil on Tuesday, but I haven't seen him since.

c) We can use ago to talk about a past time measured from the present.

1. I passed my driving test six mouths ago. 2. I wrote to the company weeks ago. 3. Have you seen John? – Yes, I saw him only a few minutes ago. 4. Angela first met Steve a long time ago.

d) Compare these sentences. They all describe the same action.

1. I've had this bike for six months. 2. I've had this bike since May. 3. I bought this bike six mouths ago.

e) We use before (not ago) with the past perfect.

1. I bought this car in August. I had passed my driving test three months before. 2. Tom finally received a reply to the letter he had written weeks before.
9. Put in for or since

A: How long have you been learning English?

B: Well, I did it ____ five years at school, and I've been having evening classes __ then.

A: And you are staying here ____ three months?

B: That's right. I've been here ____ the end of April. Then I'm going to London ___ a week afterwards.
10. Complete the sentences using for or since. e.g. You ought to wash the car

You haven't washed it for ages.

I'd better have a shower. I haven't had one since Thursday.

11. Put in a phrase with for, since or ago. e. g. I got here an hour ago. – You mean, you've been waiting for an hour?

  2. I haven't been to the dentist. – You mean you last went ______?

  3. I saw Wendy on Tuesday, I think. – You haven't seen her _______?

  4. We've had six weeks without rain. – You mean it last rained _______?

12. Put in ago or before

1. The road was wet when the accident happened.

It had stopped raining only half an hour _____.

3. The Porter family went back to live in Winchester in 1989. They had lived

there ten years ______.

4. A young man threw himself off this bridge last year. His girl-friend had left

13. Compare the use of during and while in the following sentences

1. a) I often read during a meal

b) I often read while I'm eating

2. a) It happened during the night.

b) It happened while they were asleep.

3. a) You'll have to be quiet during the performance.

b) Were there any phone calls while I was out.

14. Put in during or while

Предлог «by» употребляется для обозначения самого позднего момента, к которому произойдёт действие; «by» часто употребляется с будущим времени

^ By 5 o’clock – к пяти часам

By 2010 – к 2010 году

By tomorrow − к завтрашнему дню

Предлог «till (until)» значит до, не раньше

Till now − до сих пор

Till then – до тех пор

He didn’t write till last week – он не писал до прошлой недели.
15. Compare the use of by and until in the following sentences

1. a) Could I borrow that book? – Yes, if you can give it me back by Thursday.

b) Could I borrow that book? – Well, you can have it until Thursday.

2. a) You must be home by half past eleven.

b) You can't stay out until midnight.

3. a) They hope to finish the bridge by next July.

b) There will be traffic hold-ups until next summer.

16. Put in by or until. Clair is talking to the teacher

Claire: I'm supposed to finish my project this week, aren't I?

Mrs. Lewis: Yes, you should give it to me _____ the end of the week. I'd like

(Prepositions in Action)

Для выполнения нижеследующих упражнений необходимо знать эти слова: а dot – точка; a square – квадрат; a circle – круг; a rectangle – прямоугольник; a triangle – треугольник; to put – поместить, поставить; to draw – нарисовать, начертить.

Вспомните эти предлоги: Next to – рядом с; below – под, ниже; between – между; around – вокруг; from – от; on top of – на, сверху; under – под; above – над.
1. Draw each figure as directed

1. Put a dot in a square. 2. Draw a circle in a rectangle. 3. Put a triangle next to a circle. 4. Draw a dot below a rectangle. 5. Put a square between two circles. 6. Draw a circle with a dot in the center. 7. Put an X on a middle of a line. 8. Draw six circles around a square. 9. Put a circle with a dot in the center of a triangle.

1. Draw five triangles. Put a half circle between two of the triangles. Draw short lines from the half circle.

2. Draw a tall narrow rectangle. To the left of the rectangle put a triangle. Put a small circle between the rectangle and the triangle. Draw a square around the triangle. Draw a half circle on top of the tall rectangle. Put a star under the square.

3. Draw a square and put a rectangular door in the left-hand corner. Put a dot on the left-hand side of the door. Draw a square window next to the door on the right side. To the right of the square, draw a rectangle that is as tall as the square and as wide as one of the windows. Put a large circle on top of the rectangle.

По усмотрению преподавателя их можно выполнять либо в аудитории под руководством преподавателя, либо в качестве самостоятельной работы дома с последующим контролем выполнения в аудитории.
